Spring 2019

Spring is here!!!!

Our board has been working hard on plans for Memorial Day and Reunion. We are looking into how to handle reunion better this year and we are open to your opinions. We know parking and restrooms where a big issue last year and we are working on fixing this. When visiting the home grounds please remember that you always have to use a marked parking spot. We cannot park on the side of the road or in grass. We will continue to try and have golf carts available during any events so we can help shuttle you to and from parking lots. The grounds of our home are now the home of National Church Residence, Athletes in Action, Legacy Christian Academy, and so many more. They are all gracious enough to let us come home and hold our reunions on these grounds. All we ask is that you respect the property rules and the rules of AXP. There is absolutely No Smoking, No Drinking of Alcohol, and No use of Illegal Drugs on the grounds of the home. Thank You all for your cooperation and respect in this matter. We understand the importance of bringing ex-pupils together, not only at reunion time, but also for the various events held throughout the year. We all had a very unique upbringing with such great history to share and we are trying to keep this history alive.

Thank you, to Pat (Srofe) Harris and her husband, Clyde, who have been busy working in the Museum this last month updating displays as well as the PastPerfect project inventorying and cataloging artifacts. Thank You also goes out to Wendy Niederlander, Todd Maxwell and their team for there efforts on the Photo Project. Thank You to Judd and Gwen Targett for their time and help this last month with projects at the museum also.

As I mentioned in the past newsletters, July of 2020 we as an association will be responsible for the utility cost (Water, Electric, and Gas) the funds for these utilities will be paid out of the museum fund. With the help of a proposal sent in by Pat (Srofe) Harris we have come up with a program to help cover the funds that will be going out of the museum fund. The program was named “Help Our Museum Endure” H.O.M.E. You can find a breakdown of the program listed in the newsletter or on our website. We are hopeful to have business and community members also be part of this program.

Current lease and old lease alike the association is responsible for building maintenance at the museum (roof, windows, doors, painting, plumbing, furnace, ect). We had an issue with our Furnace/AC units. We did a band-aid repair in November and began getting quotes on new units. Our units were 15-20 years old and in much needed upgrade. On February 16, 2019 the board voted to accept a quote given to us by Kenny Sivets (Pinky). The AXP did write a check from the AXP account for the replacement and the new units have been installed. We would like to say Thank You to Jud Targett, Jim Snyder, Dave Shoults, Wayne Wells, and Kenny Sivets (Pinky). Kenny Sivets (Pinky) traveled from South Carolina to help with this and worked many hours installing our new furnaces and air conditioning equipment. They ALL volunteered their time to help with this project and we can not Thank them enough.

Ronnie Wylie Jr. will give a complete report on the Chapel fund at Reunion but I have asked him to reach out to AIA to see if we can help in any way with the funds that have been donated.

Thank you all for your continued support if you have any questions concerns or suggestions please contact me I may not always answer right away but I will get to you. All dues paid members are welcome to attend our meetings the 3rd Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

Fall 2018

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

Another reunion has come and gone, Thank You to everyone who was able to attend this year and make it such a success. Special Thank You to Carrie Murray who stepped in mid-year and took on the responsibility of 1st Vice President she did amazing; Also Thank You to all of my board members and volunteers you guys made me proud.

Even though we had a very successful reunion we have two very important issues that we do need to discuss. I was appalled by the destruction of Bill Chavanne’s brick in the Chapel Cemetery at reunion. With some investigation we believe the brick was damaged on Friday of reunion between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The AXP will not tolerate this or any kind of disrespectful act. If we find out who is responsible we will make sure that the proper punishment is enforced. I am happy to report that Bill’s brick has been replaced and all bricks have been cleaned up.

The next issue I need to discuss has to do with AXP rules when visiting the grounds of the home. Unfortunately during our reunion a small group of people were found by AIA drinking alcohol and smoking in the back parking lot by the shelter house. It is posted on many of our printouts there is no drinking or smoking on the grounds of the home. The grounds of our home are now the home of National Church Residence, Athletes in Action, Legacy Christian Academy, and so many more. They are all gracious enough to let us come home and hold our reunions on these grounds. All we ask is that you respect the property rules and the rules of AXP. There is absolutely NO Smoking, Drinking of Alcohol, or use of Illegal Drugs on the grounds of the home. Thank You all for your cooperation and respect in this matter.

We are looking into how to handle reunion better next year and we welcome all of your opinions. We know parking and restrooms where a big issue this year. When visiting the home grounds please remember that you always have to use a marked parking spot we cannot park on the side of the road we will continue to try and have golf carts available during any events so we can shuttle you to and from parking lots.

As I mentioned in the spring newsletter as well as at reunion this year our current lease ends in July of 2020. In January of 2018 I signed a 2 year renewable lease with AIA for our Museum which extended our use of the Museum to July of 2022. In July of 2020 we as an association will be responsible for the utility costs (Water, Electric, and Gas) the funds for these utilities will come out of the museum fund. I was asked again at reunion why only a lease for the museum and I cannot stress enough that we have a 10-year usage agreement on the chapel with the usage agreement we are not responsible for paying the utilities or the maintenance on the building. AIA assured us that The Chapel is not going anywhere they are extremely grateful for the funds that have been donated by the Rooney Fund for renovations of the chapel. Ronnie Wylie will be reaching out to AIA to see if there are any other Renovations we can help with with funds donated to our Chapel fund. if you have any other questions or concerns about the new lease please feel free to contact me. I will be happy to find time to meet and discuss these with you.

Current lease and old lease alike we are responsible for the maintenance of the museum roof, windows, doors, painting, plumbing, furnace, and more. That being said we currently have an issue with our Furnace/ AC unit. We are working to have a repair done but unfortunately it is only a Band-Aid. Our units are 22 years old it is time for a much-needed upgrade. We will be gathering quotes but this could be a very pricey expense and we would be grateful to any donations made specifically for the AC repairs or to the museum fund. If we have any licensed contractors who would like to provide their services please feel free to contact me. We want to keep our Museum in running order we've had many more tours as well as Todd and Wendy reaching out to the schools to schedule visits.

Thank you all for your continued support if you have any questions concerns or suggestions please contact me I may not always answer right away but I will get to you. All dues paid members are welcome to attend our meetings the 3rd Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. unless otherwise noted
